Smoke-Free Apartments Program

This website was created by the Smoking and Health Action Coalition (SHAC) of Monroe County, to educate property owners, landlords and renters about the serious health effects of secondhand smoke and the benefits of a smoke-free living environment.

Our goal is...

To educate property owners and landlords of apartment buildings of the benefits of maintaining smoke-free properties for the welfare of both the tenants and the landlords.

To educate current and future renters about their rights to smoke-free living and provide a guide on how to talk to their landlords about making their buildings smoke-free.

Facts:

* 2008 Community Tobacco Survey of Adult Residents of Monroe County. Opinions, behaviors, and perceptions related to exposure to secondhand smoke, spreading the message about the dangers of tobacco, tobacco advertising, tobacco use, and tobacco cessation.

* 12.9% of Monroe County residents rent their home.

* 48.5% of renters in Monroe County have been exposed to secondhand smoke in their multi unit dwelling.

* 56.7% of renters in Monroe County would like to see smoking restricted or not allowed at all at multi unit dwellings.

* 18.7% of renters in Monroe County say that exposure to secondhand smoke could cause them to consider moving.
